Dinoblade: How to Beat Kasei the Tyrant
Defeat Kasei the Tyrant in Dinoblade with this helpful boss fight guide.
Kasei the Tyrant is the first major challenge you’ll come across in Dinoblade. The opening chapter of the game features a couple of other strong enemies, such as Kira, the Exiled, and Axe, but those could best be described as minibosses. Kasei is the game’s first full-fledged boss, and it’s one that will put your skills to the test.
Kasei the Tyrant is what’s known as an Alpha, a particularly powerful dinosaur that guards the path to the next region. You’ll need to defeat this mighty beast to progress to the next level, but don’t worry because we’re here to help. Below you’ll find everything you need to know about Kasei the Tyrant’s strengths, weaknesses, and attack patterns.
Kasei the Tyrant Boss Fight Preparation
Since this boss fight takes place pretty early on in the game, your options here will be fairly limited. You’ll only have access to your starting weapon, a choice between two Summons, and a total of four Healing Ore. In addition, you would have acquired a bunch of SP and a handful of Boss SP by clearing the path to the boss arena. If spent wisely, these can give you a significant advantage in the upcoming fight.
As mentioned in our early game Attributes priority guide, during the opening level you’ll want to prioritize your Attributes as follows: Damage -> Stamina -> Health -> Resonance. Make sure you have at least 300 Damage, 120 or more Stamina, and over 1,000 Health. Spend a few SP on Resonance here and there, but don’t worry about it too much at this stage.
In terms of Soul Arts, you’ll only need to focus on two of them for this fight. Kasei is very aggressive and doesn’t give you a lot of time to charge abilities, so Meteor Slice is your best bet for dealing ability damage. Alpha Roar is the other crucial Soul Art here. The ability can be used to briefly incapacitate the boss, giving you a few free hits, or enough time to pop in some Healing Ore. As far as the Summon is concerned, Axe is the one you want for this fight.
Kasei the Tyrant Boss Fight Strategy – Phase 1
This is a two-phase boss fight that takes place inside a sizeable arena with large pillars of stone scattered about, which you can use for cover. The fight starts with Kasei walking slowly toward the player, presumably in an attempt to intimidate them. Use this time to prepare your charged attack and smack the boss as soon as it’s in range. This will likely be the only chance to use a charged attack during this fight, so make it count.
It's going to be tempting to rush the boss after that initial attack, but try to fight slow and methodical instead to conserve Stamina. Kasei uses a couple of different moves during this phase, including an attack where it leaps into the air before crashing back down. This attack can’t be deflected, so make sure to get out of the way. But don’t dodge too early because the attack has a little delay.
Kasei uses a couple of other attacks during the first phase that look like variations of the aforementioned move. All these attacks are unblockable and involve a lot of spinning and ground pounding. You can use Alpha Roar to interrupt them, but it’s often easier to just dodge them and counterattack immediately after with a combo of your own.
The boss has a couple of attacks it can use to punish you if you stay too close, but one of them can be deflected. As a reminder, a lot of attacks in Dinoblade are color-coded – white glow means you can deflect it, red glow means you can’t. In this case, you’ll want to keep an eye on Kasei’s tail because the blockable attack is going to be a tail swipe.
Focus on dodging and counterattacking whenever you find an opening, but don’t overcommit. And don’t use up any cooldowns during this phase if you can help it. You’ll need the Resonance for the next phase. Once you’ve drained about one third of Kasei’s health bar, the boss will get rid of its improvised living weapon and will grab an actual weapon as the fight enters the second phase.
Kasei the Tyrant Boss Fight Strategy – Phase 2
The second phase of the fight starts with the boss launching at you and throwing you up into the air. This is followed by a quick-time event where you have to mash the right mouse button to prevent Kasei from wrecking you with its newly acquired weapon. Unlike a regular deflect, this won’t result in your character automatically counterattacking, but it will spare you from a devastating attack.
With the QTE out of the way, the fight will resume as normal. As is often the case with these things, the boss becomes more aggressive during the second phase and gains a couple of new moves to boot. The most dangerous new attack has the boss flinging its oversized weapon in your general direction before performing a front flip and attempting to crush you. The weapon fling isn’t telegraphed and can be difficult to anticipate, but even if you do get hit by the weapon, you’ll need to get out of the way asap to avoid the follow-up.
The good news about the second phase of the fight is that Kasei uses its tail swipe more often. Deflect and counterattack this every chance you get. It’s worth noting that while you can deflect this attack with proper timing, your dino won’t automatically unleash a counterattack unless the boss’ Resolve Bar is maxed out. You’ll know it’s maxed out when the little bar sitting beneath the larger Health Bar turns orange.
Since the second phase of the fight is a lot more intense, you’ll want to spend any Resolve you have on Soul Arts and Summons to gain an advantage. Alpha Roar is particularly good here as it gives you time to perform a full combo on the boss without getting hit back. If successful, you’ll stagger the boss for a split second, giving you enough time to get a few more hits in. Meteor Slice and the Axe Summon have a similar effect, and they’re best used to interrupt Kasei’s own combos.
If you’re struggling to avoid Kasei’s attacks, you can use the stone pillars scattered around the arena as cover. The pillars are unbreakable and unpassable, so you’ll be completely safe hiding behind one. You can cheese the boss a little bit by hiding behind a pillar and occasionally poking it with an attack or two when you see an opening. That said, it’s better to stay out in the open for most of this fight, since you’ll need to dodge a lot and might get stuck if you start rolling wildly between the pillars and the rock wall.
