How to Customize Appearance in Echoes of Aincrad

Echoes of Aincrad lets you dive into the world of Sword Art Online with your own custom character, but you'll start out with a default appearance for the game's introduction. If you're a few hours into Echoes of Aincrad and are starting to worry that you've missed the character creation menu somehow, then you're not alone.

The opportunity to create your custom Echoes of Aincrad character comes much later than you'd expect, and you can be stuck with the default appearance for quite some time if you're dead set on exploring Aincrad during your first few quests.

How to Create a Custom Character in Echoes of Aincrad

You can create a custom character after completing the Echoes of Aincrad prologue. In the story, the prologue quests take place in Sword Art Online's beta test. The real plot is set in motion once SAO officially launches and everyone gets trapped inside the game.

You'll be done with the prologue once you've completed Iori's Request, Within the Shadows, The Violent Fencer I, and The Violet Fencer II. These quests will introduce you to the main cast of characters, including your first set of Partners like Iori. Once the SAO beta test comes to a close, you'll finally reach the character creation screen.

After making a custom character, you'll still be stuck with the default player model for a bit. When you join your squad at the Town of Beginnings, you'll swap to your custom character after a pivotal cutscene.

Can You Edit Your Appearance in Echoes of Aincrad?

There is no way to edit your appearance in Echoes of Aincrad after the initial character creation screen. If you want to touch up your looks, you'll need to redo the prologue section of the game.

You can equip different armor and clothing to switch up your style, but your character's face, body, and voice are set in stone after locking everything in. Make sure you're happy with your choices before continuing past the character creation screen!
