You can do a lot more than just pet the dog in Loftia. This cozy MMO farming sim lets you own many pets, including dogs, cats, and even alpacas.
You don't acquire them all the same way, and some are exclusive to DLCs. Nevertheless, the majority of pets are available to all players, so here's how to get every Pet in Loftia.
How to unlock pets in Loftia
You will unlock the ability to collect pets in Loftia by completing the quest 'Notes From the Fauna', which has you help Joanna in the Hanging Gardens during the 'Field Research' quest. Joanna will tell you that she's lost a dog, so you're tasked with looking around for clues about the dog's whereabouts. Follow the tracks marked by magnifying glass symbols, which lead to the dog's food bowl.
Place the correct food in the bowl, and then the dog will appear. Talk to Joanna to complete the quest, and she will allow you to adopt the dog and name it. Speak with Joanna afterward to initiate other quests to find more pets around Loftia. They all require you to look for clues in specific areas and give the pets the correct food.

Once you equip a pet in Loftia, the more you do activities with that pet, the higher their Friendship level will get. Reaching certain Friendship levels will unlock cosmetics for that pet, so make sure to hang out with them as much as possible!
