Mortal Shell 2: How To Beat The Wandering Shepherd
Here's how to beat the Wandering Shepherd.
Mortal Shell 2 is a game that boasts quite a few bosses, and quite a lot of those are a little more gimmicky than others. The Wandering Shepherd would certainly fall into that category.
This is a boss that utilizes his flock to get one over on the player, as it's less about fighting the boss himself and more about thinning out the field of livestock.
That said, it can be a tricky fight, even if you know what you're getting into. So, to help with that, here is our Wandering Shepherd guide
Where Is The Wandering Shepherd?
The Wandering Shepard is a boss that you'll find on your way towards the Magdalena fight. You'll need to work your way through the Sunken Village until you reach the Beacon for the area. Then, just across the bridge after lighting this beacon, you'll come into contact with the Wandering Shepherd.
To access the path to this boss, you'll need to cleanse the Mushroom Village Gate Beacon and beat Vrannic. Then, once the corruption clears, you'll be able to enter a corruption gate leading toward this boss.
How To Prepare
At this point, you should have a fair amount of early-game build options, so with that in mind, here is a reasonable and attainable build to take on this boss.
Level: 8+
Shell: Gragu
Weapon: Iconoclast or Axe & Dagger (5+ or higher)
Sidearm: Naylshotte
Seal: Vatra's Seal
Support Tarstones: Auspicious Stone, Marksman Stone, Siegebreaker's Stone, Berserker's Stone
Combat & Infusion Tarstones: Grudge Stone & Emberseed Stone
Mether's Pulse: +1 Capacity, +1 Efficiency
The two most important aspects of this build are the use of Gragu and the Siegebreaker's Stone. Mainly because you'll be fighting mobs, so Gragu's healing recharge effect is a borderline cheat code. Plus, with the mob enemies contributing to stagger, the Siegebreaker Tarstone just speeds things up.
How To Beat The Wandering Shepherd
Now for the fight itself. The Wandering Shepherd is a bit of a trick boss in many ways. Because if you simply try to fight the boss alone, you'll be in for a bad time. They are elusive, and you'll then get overwhelmed by their demonic sheep minions.
Instead, you'll want to completely turn your attacking efforts toward the sheep, as each kill contributes to the boss' stagger bar. This will eventually allow you to land a devastating critical hit, and then get a few heavy attacks in after for good measure.
Crowd control is a big deal here, so you'll want to make use of your sidearm as much as possible here to keep enemies at range and avoid getting crowded. Plus, staying central and away from walls is a good plan.
In terms of the boss, they will attack you alongside the sheep and will typically cast out their floating weapons to attack you from a distance. It's hard to track these weapons amid the chaos, so I suggest keeping an eye on their flight paths and dodging or hardening.
Then, about halfway through the fight, the boss will transition into their second phase, the Tarblighted Shepard, which essentially only grants them one more attack, but it's a doozy.
They will be able to cast an AOE attack, and if you're in range, you'll be transformed into a sheep, leaving you completely vulnerable to an attack. The only way to avoid this is to back off when they start glowing red; otherwise, you'll be a sitting duck... or sheep.
That aside, this is all you need to worry about. So, if you manage the crowd of demonic sheep well, you'll likely force this shepherd into an early retirement.
