Palworld: How to Get Ancient Lava, Ancient Bark & Ancient Bone
Gear up and head to the Wildlife Sanctuaries, here's a full guide.
Every Palworld adventurer has opened at least one crafting recipe and thought ... how the hell do I get that material? It's easy to predict that you'll find the new item on the next island, especially if it's some kind of new ore. Unfortunately, that's not the case for some materials, especially Ancient Lava, Ancient Bark, and Ancient Bone.
I'm quite a linear gamer; usually I'll follow the mission objectives and stick to the trajectory that the quests push me through, as I don't like to spoil future story beats. As a result, I completely missed out on all the ancient resources because I completely forgot about the reworked Wildlife Sanctuaries, while assuming that missions would direct me there at some point.
Ancient Lava, Ancient Bark, and Ancient Bone can only be collected in the three respective Wildlife Sanctuaries - time to sharpen up your pickaxe.
How to Get Ancient Bark in Palworld
Let's start off with Ancient Bark as it's the easiest of the three to obtain. You'll need to head to the No. 1 Wildlife Sanctuary, which also happens to be the prettiest, with beautifully coloured trees, a calm naturalistic vibe, and some pretty majestic animals to pair with the green environment.
You'll also find a level 30 Grizzbolt Alpha Pal, which is perfect if you were looking to complete Zoey's questline, which tasks you with obtaining a Grizzbolt
Head southwest from the spawn area to find the No. 1 Wildlife Sanctuary. But beware: there is a large stretch of water that you'll need to cross to access it, so make sure you have enough stamina and a friendly fishy Pal to mount, or you can opt for a flying Pal if you don't like getting your feet wet.
After you dock at the island, look for tree stumps that look like they've already been a victim of a strong axe. The wood also has a green tinge, making it pretty easy to spot. All that's left to do is whip out your axe and get to chopping - but be careful of the level 80 Drone that patrols the island.
If you see a red spotlight shine in your vicinity, run as fast as you can - the Drone inflicts an obscene amount of damage. But luckily, it won't target you unless you're directly in its sights. Considering the powerful ancient technology used in the construction of these drones, you'd think they'd be a bit less blind...
How to Get Ancient Lava in Palworld
Moving on to No. 2 Wildlife Sanctuary, you'll notice a very volcanic difference in comparison to the first druidic haven. This island appears more rough and dangerous, with many flammable accidents looming in the not-too-distant future. Take it from me, don't fall into the lava. You'll find some more hostile Pals in this Sanctuary, so make sure you have your wits about you.
You'll need to trek upwards from the main volcanic region to reach the island. As explained previously, you'll need a Pal who's a strong swimmer or a fantastic flier to ferry you over the ocean. As you're travelling, you can strategise on how you're going to take down the level 55 Astegon Alpha Pal hidden inside the island's cave.
After evading the ever-vigilant Drones, you'll need to quickly make your way to a blue molten rock and swiftly introduce it to your pickaxe. Ancient Lava will drop as you mine it.
One thing to note: make sure your bags are pretty much empty before you head out on your ancient resource expedition; all three of the materials are pretty heavy and will quickly cap out your maximum holding capacity.
How to Get Ancient Bones in Palworld
Looking somewhat barren and more ... radioactive than the other two locations, I seriously doubt the person who coined this No. 3 Wildlife Sanctuary. As the most dangerous island out of the three, you'll need to be decently geared up and prepared to fight before you opt to traverse this wasteland.
Having quenched your thirst after your trek through the dusty desert, continue to the northeast corner of the map and find the island hosting the final Sanctuary. Just don't expect to take on the Alpha Pal that owns this island - the level 65 Frostllion Noct won't take kindly to your presence. Trust me, he takes NO prisoners.
Hold your breath and seek out the skeletal carcasses scattered across the soil. Make sure you're really paying attention, as their yellowish colour blends in with the ground, making them pretty hard to spot if you're in a hurry. You know the drill by now: take a whack with your pickaxe and escape with as many bones as you can carry, before the Drones lock their sights on you.
You'll have made a great bond with your Pal who carried you on their back to lands unknown; make sure you treat them with a snack when you arrive back home.
