Moonlighter 2: How to Beat Monte
The final boss awaits.
Moonlighter 2 has six bosses in total, spread out across the three worlds. As you'd expect these bosses can often be a tricky obstacle to overcome, but doing so is essential if you want to keep your Relics all in one piece and maximize your profits.
Monte is the final boss of the game, and the brother to the Zephyr Fields location's Senda. He can be found at the end of runs in Aeolia's Howling Harbor, and is without a doubt, the most difficult fight in the game. Luckily, if you're looking for some tips on how to defeat this guy in battle, then we've got you covered. Our guide below can walk you through everything you need to know about how to beat Monte in Moonlighter 2.
How to Beat Monte in Moonlighter 2
Monte is the most difficult boss in Moonlighter 2 because there is simply just so much more going on than the other fights. You have to navigate terrain that can harm you by clipping away at your health, a range of different attacks by Monte, and three different arena sections that you must rotate between at certain fight intervals. Essentially, you'll always need to be moving when you face Monte and have your reflex ready to make adjustments as you go.
Monte can dive under the cloud like terrain on his manta ray and disappear from view, before striking up to hit you. He also has several dash attacks and a huge AOE lightning attack that can quickly hack away at your health. Monte also features run-and-dodge intervals where you will need to avoid taking damage, reach a rope, and jump between three islands.
Monte Boss Fight Threats
- AOE attacks via both dives and lightning
- Heavy-hitting damage
- Arena/Terrain capable of chipping away health
- Run-and-dodge segments
- Zipline between three
Because Monte has such deadly AOE attacks, I personally found it a bit easier to take him down with a weapon that has more reach, such as a strong long sword or spear.
Monte Boss Fight Progressions / Phases
To begin the fight, Monte will dive under the cloudy terrain and jump back up to try and damage you. You will get a circular indicator for where he will jump up, so time your dodge accordingly. He will also do a diving dash towards you from the air, but this also has a circular indicator to help with dodge timing.
Monte will then cast large lightning AOEs, so stay on what sections of the map are not consumed and use your gun to attack him from far during these moments.
Monte will then rise up above you, leaving you to navigate a run-and-dodge scenario. The terrain now begins to damage you, so you need to keep moving upwards as fluidly as possible. He will start with casing some AOE blasts down on you, so get out of the way immediately, as they deal massive damage and have a huge hit radius.
There are blockades and obstacles you will need to avoid the way, so try not to clip them and get stuck, as you run the risk of significantly lowering your health if you spend too long in the terrain.
Once you reach the rope, press and hold to climb up it and reach the three islands above.
Monte will shield himself, and you will now need to use the ziplines to move across all three islands as he casts AOE blasts across one of them at a time. Keep in mind the zipline takes travel time so you need to jump on them as early as possible to avoid damage.
When Monte sends out the purple rocks, use the ziplines to travel to them, and hit the interact button to hit them back towards him and wither down his shield.
Following this, Monte will up the intensity a little bit, moving back to the terrain and setting up AOE attacks with his manta ray while also casting laser-like beams across the arena horizontically, vertically, and diagonally.
He will also send out some deployable minions to try and damage you, while another annoying obstacle they are an easy way to farm back your bullets so you can continue weaving in ranged gunfire.
After this, you will need to do another run-and-d0dge segment and get your way up to the islands again. Much like down below, Monte has made this section more difficult with additional minions that will float around and try to damage you, as well as the AOE blasts from earlier.
There will be one more interval remaining to defeat Monte. This time on the ground, he will create vertical strips across the terrain, sending electrical blasts through them instead of his big AOE. He will also use his dive attacks, so watch out, these electrified strips of terrain make it much trickier to avoid the hitbox of his big manta ray. And once again, he will deploy more minions.
This will soon progress to giant wavy AOE attacks with more rapid cast time, with a dash worked in at the same time. This means you need to dodge both Monte himself and the restricted terrain to avoid taking damage in these final moments.
Attack him either with your gun or during the very slim window between attacks to get those final hits in and defeat him once and for all.
Monte Rewards & Loot
Defeating Monte will grant you with 2 randomized chests of Relics, so use this opportunity to utilize their effects and replace your bag with any more valuable finds before exiting the run. You'll also gain 1x The King's Right Mask, a unique material that can only be dropped by Monte.
The King's Right Mask can be used to forge the Ray Axe short sword over at Andrei's fort, a weapon that enables you to perform a Special Finisher after your main Attack Finisher, dealing +20% damage.
