Mortal Shell 2: How To Upgrade Weapons

Time for a more powerful weapon.

Updated 2 min read

Mortal Shell 2 is a game where you are as much of a weapon as your actual weapons are. Your shell is a deadly tool in your arsenal. But, at the end of the day, you'll still need some cutting edge and firepower to chop enemies down to size.

There is a plethora of weapons in MS2, but in their base form, they will soon lose their effectiveness, meaning you'll need to upgrade them. This can't be done right away, but as soon as you make it to The Marrow Keep, you'll be able to upgrade your weapons, and this is how to go about it.

Where Do You Upgrade Weapons?

When players complete the opening stages of the game and deliver the first Ovum at The Marrow Keep, they will then gain access to a lot of the game's progression mechanics.

You'll be able to access merchants, level up your character, and most importantly, upgrade your weapons.

This is done in the area left of the Beacon at The Marrow Keep. Up the stairs just past Vratko, you'll find Franz the Tarforge Smith, who will help you improve your weapons.

How To Get Materials

Players will need to obtain specific materials to upgrade their weapons. These are the things you'll need to be on the lookout for:

  • Ventrium
  • Laterite
  • Dorsalite
  • Thoracium

You can obtain these items via two methods. You can either find them through natural exploration, as these items tend to be found in hidden locations.

Alternatively, you can head to Merrick's shop at The Marrow Keep and purchase these materials for gold. However, I would suggest trying to simply find what you need, as there is quite a lot available if you're willing to look.

One additional tip I would offer is to attack all glowing trees, as they occasionally drop materials rather than Gloom.

How To Upgrade The Tarforge

Eventually you will hit a wall when it comes to upgrading your gear, as the Forge simply won't be able to improve what you already have refined. Which means you'll need to find items to upgrade the forge itself.

These are items like the Etching Needles or the Obsidian Lathe that give you access to new features. Like upgrading Firearms and Tarstones, respectively.

This is how you keep your loadout well-rounded rather than relying solely on your main weapon. So, be sure to keep an eye out for these essentials and bring them to Franz to pimp out your Tarforge.
